Notre-Dame de la Salette

Notre-Dame de la Salette

A unique site 1,800 metres above sea level, Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette is France's second most important site for pilgrims after Lourdes.

On the 19th September 1846, the Virgin Mary appeared to two young shepherds called Maximin and Mélanie.

Since the apparition, millions of pilgrims have climbed the ruggedly beautiful mountain to the pilgrimage site to pray and reflect.

In winter, this area is bathed in sunlight.

On the edges of the Les Ecrins National Park, the site stands on a rocky shelf between Mont Planeau and the slopes of Le Gargas and Le Chamoux.

Nestling in the mountain hollow, the Sanctuary looks over a sea of clouds. The exceptional panorama looks out on to the heights of Le Dévoluy and the dominating Obious Summit. Down below lie Le Sautet Lake, Pellafol Plateau and, to the right, Mont Aiguille on the Vercors Plateau in the distance.

Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette is also a special place for relaxation and leisure pursuits. Visitors can enjoy beautiful walks on snowshoes, skiing in the local resorts, observing the stars or just savouring the local culinary delights... there is undoubtedly something for everyone!
